Sobre Bernardo Aja

Bernardo Aja was born in Santander, Spain, in 1973.  He studied Fine Arts at Los Angeles University.  For two years he completed his education working for professional photographers in New York.  He has worked in different countries, drawing experiences that have allowed him to find himself in a constant search for dialogue between photography and his own concepts, which are perceivable through his imagery.  With internal debates and worries, Aja shows a critical regard that analyzed the most intimate of each character that he portrays.

Between 1997 and 1999 Aja was personal photographer to Alberto Fujimori, then president of Peru.  He also worked as graphic reporter in South America for different agencies (EFE, AP and Reuters, among others). He has worked as well with the Spanish Royal House.

Among his most important personal projects is EntreMuros, a very subtle reflection on the behavior and the habitat of the Hispanic Aristocracy (Spanish and Latin American) in our days.  A selection of pieces belonging to this project has been exhibited in Casa de America (Madrid), Casa de la Cultura de España (Lisbon), Museo de Tlatelolco (Mexico City), Santo Domingo Convent (Oaxaca, Mexico) and in the Circulo de Bellas Artes (Madrid).

In 2011 he took part at the Florence Biennale. In 2014 he participated at the Bienal de Lima and in 2015 in the Bienal de La Habana.

Bernardo Aja is included in the Dictionary of Spanish Photographers and is an active member of the Mexico City Chronicle Counsel.

He lives and works in Mexico City.
